Over the years I've had the opportunity to read a tremendous amount of books, studies and articles around the reverse mortgage. I've done my best to list what I consider my top 5 list of resources for you!
1. What's The Deal With Reverse Mortgages by Shelley Giordano.
Shelley has been entrenched in the reverse mortgage industry for years. She's a founder of the Academy of Home Equity and Financial Planning (currently housed at University of Illinois) and also chairs the taskforce of Funding Longevity at the American College. This is a simple and easy to read book for consumers around the reverse mortgage.
2. How To use a Reverse Mortgage To Secure Your Retirement by Wade Pfau.
Wade is a CFA, PHD from Princeton and professor at the American College. He currently directs the RICP program (Retirement Income Certified Professional) and is a sought after speaker and a thought leader in the retirement planning field. Wade's book is a technical look at some of the most eye opening reverse mortgage studies. This resources is designed for financial planners and/or consumers who are technical and very well versed in retirement planning.
3. Busting Three Half Truth's About The Reverse Mortgage by Jamie Hopkins
Jamie is currently a managing partner at Carson Wealth Management. He's an esquire, CFP, ChFC, CLU, RICP and also a very well known speaker in the retirement research field. Jamie has authored multiple books and is considered a thought leader in the financial services world. In an article published by Forbes, Jamie discusses the most common myths and misconceptions the media uses to sensationalize the reverse mortgage. If you're trying to understand the reverse mortgage in a simple to digest format, this is a good piece to make a part of your research.
4. HECM Reverse Mortgages: Now Or Last Resort by Shaun Pfeiffer and John Salter
John Salter is a very well known academic who has worked at Texas Tech where he wrote a number of articles for the Journal of Financial Planning including this study taking a look at whether the traditional use of a revers mortgage made sense or if we should be shifting our focus on how to use it as a strategic tool. If you're a financial planner this is a great article to understand the benefit of using the reverse mortgage before it's needed to help reduce risk!
